How sex therapy works

Our approach to sex therapy is sex-positive, body-positive, and focused on what’s most important to you.

Sex therapy is a specialized form of talk therapy that’s designed to help you explore the obstacles keeping you from the sexual or relational satisfaction you feel is missing. Our therapists are trained in a variety of interventions, so we can tailor our approach based on your needs.

Our job is, first and foremost, to listen to you. We honor your unique experiences and we trust your expertise in your own life and future. Our goal is that you feel in charge of this process, dictating what your goals are and therefore, where your therapist and you will focus.

We are here to support you in exploring and better understanding your sexual experiences from mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual vantage points, engaging in self-compassion and self-discovery, and developing & maintaining consensual, respectful sexual relationships.

Our practice is LGBTQIA+ affirming. We welcome people of all genders and orientations.

Therapists who can help

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We recognize that sex is often just a piece of the puzzle in your life, and we seek to understand the whole picture in order to best support you. We’ll start with a traditional intake appointment, discussing what’s bringing you to therapy, your family background and upbringing, and your mental health history.

Then, we’ll have a separate sex history interview. The purpose of this session is to offer a space to share the feelings and experiences specific to sex and to help you develop sexual goals for your time in therapy. From there, you and your therapist will begin meeting for standard sessions at a frequency that feels comfortable to you.

  • Definitely not. Much of the work of sex therapy is actually getting to know yourself better—your body, your identity, and what’s important to you. That may be in the form of gender or sexual identity (we are LGBTQIA+ allied), addressing sexual dysfunction or health concerns, or simply getting comfortable in your own skin. We can also support you in developing and maintaining fulfilling sexual relationships in the future.

  • This depends on your unique needs and the goals we set together for therapy. Some people need support for just a few months, while others stay with their therapist over a longer period of time. We’ll monitor your progress regularly throughout our work so that you can make informed decisions about continuing care.

  • Standard therapy sessions are 50 minutes long. Sometimes we also offer extended sessions. If your therapist feels that a different length would best suit your needs for any reason, they’ll discuss this with you.
