How Child & Teen therapy works

We believe kids deserve a place where they can feel heard and not judged.

Our work with children, pre-teens, and teens is grounded in relationship: if they don’t feel they can trust us, they’re unlikely to open up and express themselves fully. This starts by building a strong foundation of rapport and understanding. We’ll base this on what interests your child, whether it’s music, games, art, or another method for connection.

As we get to know one another, we’ll begin to work with your child on discussing what’s bothering them and brainstorming new skills or strategies to help them. Sessions are broken up into three sections: the first 10% spent checking in on how their week went and how they’re feeling, 80% therapeutic work, and the final 10% wrapping up and helping them feel good as they leave session and get back to daily life.

A NOTE FOR PARENTS

THERE’S SUPPORT FOR YOU, TOO.

We view child’s therapy as a team effort: all of us working together toward the same goal. Your child’s therapist will work closely with you to monitor your child’s progress, as well as equip you with the insight, skills, and guidance you need to help them thrive outside of therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We believe parents or caregivers are a crucial part of your child’s success in therapy. Your level of participation is based, in part, on your child’s age, but you’ll be regularly informed of the things we work on. You may also be invited to participate in sessions to enhance your own insight and skill-building in interacting with your child. Your child’s therapist will discuss this with you as you begin working together.

  • Your child’s confidentiality is important to us. While we will keep you informed about what we are working on together, the specifics of our conversations will remain confidential*. In the event your child’s therapist feels it would be useful to share something with you, they will discuss this with the child and how it can be communicated to you in a positive, constructive way.

*NOTE: As mandated reporters, we will always take appropriate action in the event your child poses a danger to themselves or others or discloses abuse. In such instances, breaking confidentiality becomes necessary to protect your child.

  • This depends on your child’s unique needs and the goals we set together for therapy. Some children need support for just a few months, while others stay with their therapist over a longer period of time. We’ll monitor their progress regularly throughout our work, and help both you and them make informed decisions about continuing care.

  • Standard therapy sessions are 55 minutes long. We recognize that there may be a need for abbreviated sessions, and your therapist can discuss this with you.
